Introduction
Neil Stuart
Neil started calling for the occasional ceilidh almost 40 years ago, but on moving to near Chesterfield, North Derbyshire over 25 years ago, started to call more often and now calls regularly for dance clubs and evening dances (and still the occasional ceilidh). He calls most types of dance – especially Playford, English, and some American-style contras – including many of his own compositions (he has to date published twelve books of his dances). He runs the Spire Folk Dance Club in Chesterfield, and has called at the Lichfield Folk Festival, Casterton dance weekend and Morland dance week, as well as (Folk in South Yorkshire) FISY weekend dances and workshops, and club nights and evening dances for other dance groups (e.g. Lincoln, Nottingham, Cannock).
During the Covid pandemic, and ably assisted by wife Marguerite, he ran a monthly Zoom dance in lieu of the Spire Club, and was also one of the regular callers for the Nottingham Folk dance Club weekly Zoom evenings. In conjunction with Deo Volente (Dave & Victoria Yeomans), he called the first Saturday evening dance on Zoom for Nottingham using live music from another location.
Neil currently calls once a month on Zoom for Symmetry ECD, which is run from the US, where he has become a firm favourite of the mainly American audience for his clear and descriptive calling style.
